Birth & early life
Born at Berren, near Newtown, Montgomeryshire.
Enlistment
Enlisted at Worcester on the 14th of October 1850.
Age: 24.
Height: 5’ 7”.
Trade: Farrier.
Features: Fresh complexion. Hazel eyes. Lt. brown hair.
Service, discharge & pension
Sent to Scutari on the 19th of October 1854 and rejoined the regiment on the 14th of December.
From Private to Corporal: 2nd of January 1856.
Corporal to Sergeant: 1st of March 1858.
Re-engaged at Aldershot for a further 12-year period of service on the 27th of September 1862.
Discharged from Aldershot on the 24th of June 1873, as “Free, at own request, after 21 years service.”
Served 22 years 235 days.
In Turkey and the Crimea, 2 years.
In Canada, 2 years 11 months.
Conduct: “very good.” Would be in possession of four Good Conduct badges if not promoted.
Awarded a pension of 2/- per day.
Next of kin: Wife, Ann Davies. Is shown on the Regimental “Married roll” from the 22nd of March 1857. One son, George, was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1868.
Medals & commemorations
Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp, Turkish, and the Long Service and Good Conduct medal with a gratuity of £5.
Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.
Lummis and Wynn state: “No clasps.”
A supplementary roll (undated) signed by Major Henry Holden shows him as being issued with the Crimean medal (without clasp) on the 7th of October 1855.
Awarded the L. S & G. C. medal on the 22nd of January 1870.
To live, c/o. “The Raleigh Club”, Regent Street, London.
Death & burial
Died in the No. 1 London Pension District on the 30th of October 1873 (according to the Pension Book.) The L.S. & G.C. roll states that he died in October 1871, but this is obviously not so.
