1770 William BRUNNING.

 

Born in the parish of St. George’s, Southwark.

 

Enlistment details

 

Enlisted at Westminster on the 12th of January 1855.

Age: 20.

Height: 5’ 8”.

Trade: Callender.

Fresh complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 1 August 1855.

Transferred to the 17th Lancers on the 1st of September 1857. Regtl. No. 81.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. “Great Britain” on the 8th of October 1857.

Transferred to the 20th Hussars on the 1st of December 1864. Regtl. No. 673.

Re-engaged in India for a further 12 years service on the 2nd of October 1866.

 

Discharged from Aldershot on the 12th of August 1875 as “Unfit for further service. Has chronic rheumatism - worn out from combined effects of climate and service in India - disability permanent. Will be able to contribute towards earning a living.”

 

Served 20 years 182 days. In Turkey and the Crimea, 10 months. East Indies, 13 years 5 months.

Conduct, “very good.” Four times entered in the Regtl. Defaulter’s book. Never tried by Court-martial. Is in possession of four G.C. badges.

Awarded a pension of 1/1d. per day.

To live at No. 11 High Street, Aldershot.

Documents confirm Crimean, Mutiny (although his name cannot be found on the Mutiny medal roll) and the L.S. & G.C. medal.

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

If awarded, his Mutiny medal would have been without clasp.

The muster rolls for the period July-September 1858 show him as being “On Detachment at Sholapoore” during the whole of this period.

Awarded the L. S. & G. C. medal on the 19th of September 1874 with a gratuity of £5.
