LIVES OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE
The E.J. Boys Archive

1398, Private Richard Attwell — 17th Lancers

This page focuses on material in the EJBA about the death, burial and memorialisation of this man, with only a very brief outline of his life to aid identification. In many cases, there is considerably more information in the archive about birth and early life, military career, medals, discharge, and family and later life. If you can contribute additional information — for example photographs, letters or articles — or have a particular interest, please contact the editors. We would be delighted to hear from you.

Note

There was originally no information about this man in the EJBA. When he started researching the field, James Boys included only those men he knew from records had actually arrived in the Crimea. He later accepted that this was too restrictive, but was unable to add all the men who embarked for but did not reach the Crimea. Many, for example, died en route at Varna, Bulgaria, where epidemic diseases such as cholera were rife in the camps. Others arrived later.

The current editors are intending to include these men, and will be adding information as soon as possible.
